Boiled Mung Dal with Veg | |
* Mung Dal (150gns) * Carrot (50gms) * Green chilli -1 (split in middle) * Oil 2tbls * Boiled water 3cups * For Phoron (flavouring oil) - 1.5 tbsp oil - 1 tsp of five spices or ½ tsp of cumin and ½ tsp of black zeera
* Heat oil (2 tbsp) in a large pan and add mung dal. Keep frying on low heat for 5mins.then pour boiled water. Add sliced carrots, green chilli and salt. When boiling, turn the heat to simmer and cook for 20mins. Keep warm
* Prepare Phoron: - Heat 1.5 tbsp oil in a small pan, add five spices or cumin and black zeera . When aroma is released, pour mixture in dal and simmer for 5mins. * Serves 4 and cost .50p | ![]() |
Boiled Masoor Dal (Lentils) With Garlic Phoron | |
* Masoor dal (150gms) * Onion (50gms) –thinly slices * Green chilli -1 (split in middle) * 3 cups water * For Phoron (flavouring oil) -1 clove garlic sliced -4 small dry chilli -2tbls oil
* Wash dal in cold water -4/5 times * Take a large pan and boil dal with cold water. Add sliced onion, green chilli. When it reaches boiling point, turn heat to simmer and add salt. At this stage, expect to see some froth – scoop out froth as much as possible. Boil for 15mins. Keep warm.
* Prepare phoron: Heat oil (2tbsp ) in a small pan, add chopped garlic and dry chillis. When chillis turned black and garlic turned brown - add mixture to boiled dal. Simmer for further 5mins. * Garnish with chopped coriander leaves. * Serves 4 and cost .50p. | ![]() |
